Dallas Smith — December’s “Artist on the Rise”

Breakout artist Dallas Smith brings a bit of rock and a whole lot of energy to his music. Hailing from British Columbia, he is now grabbing the attention of American country fans with his single “Tippin’ Point.” In addition Dallas is in the midst of touring with Florida Georgia Line on their “Here’s to the Good Times” tour! We recently caught up with Dallas to talk about how he got started in music, what it’s like being on the road with Florida Georgia Line and much more!

CMM:

When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?

Dallas Smith:

Music was a huge part of my childhood. Everyone sang in my house growing up, but for whatever reason I was too shy to sing in front of anyone. I would sing when no one could hear me. When I was 21 I finally gained enough courage to sing a few cover songs with my friends band and that was it. I was hooked. Got my 1st record deal a year later and I’ve been doing it ever since.

CMM:

Who are some of your musical influences?

Dallas Smith:

I had a bit of everything being played growing up. Main influences would be the Beatles and female country artists to be honest. Tons of Reba and the Judds.

CMM:

Being from Canada, do you see a big difference between the country music scene there and over here in the U.S?

Dallas Smith:

Not a huge difference. There is a lot of fantastic talent up here in Canada. I really think the Canadian country music scene is growing and moving in the right direction.

CMM:

“Tippin’ Point” is such a catchy song! Did you know you wanted to record it as soon as you heard it?

Dallas Smith:

Before I was played the “Tippin’ Point” demo I was told to “keep an open mind” by my producer. It’s clearly an amazing song but it was completely out of my comfort zone. I trusted him and I was able to make it my own. I’m very glad I listened.

CMM:

What is the fan reaction like when you perform it live?

Dallas Smith:

People who know it are loving it live. It’s fun to watch the rest of the crowd slowly start nodding their heads to it.

CMM:

What is it like being on the road with Florida Georgia Line?

Dallas Smith:

Those guys bring it every night. It’s inspiring to see how much they enjoy doing what they do. They love their fans.

Brian, Tyler and their entire crew have treated us so well.

CMM

Are you working on an album right now? If so, any details you can share with us?

Dallas Smith:

We are working on finishing upon EP. Should be out early next year. It is a front to back high energy collection of songs. Can’t wait to share what we’re working on.

CMM:

How would you describe your music to those who haven’t heard it yet?

Dallas Smith:

That’s a tough question to answer. My approach to what I do is to record songs that challenge me as a singer. I want songs that translate to a high energy set. I like making the listener feel a wide range of emotions and try to create those goose bump moments.

CMM:

What do you want the fans to know most about you?

Dallas Smith:

I’m an honest, no BS guy and I don’t take myself seriously. My friends and I are constantly making fun of each other. It can be quite brutal at times but it’s very entertaining.

CMM:

What does the rest of 2013 have in store for you? Can you share any 2014 plans?

Dallas Smith:

Going to finish off this FGL tour and then my wife and I are having a baby girl in January. 2014 is going to be a busy year it seems. Got some exciting tours in the works…lots of festivals…can’t wait!
